Blurb From The Publisher:

After setting out to break the curse that binds them together, the pirate Ananna and the assassin Naji find themselves stranded on an enchanted island in the north with nothing but a sword, their wits, and the secret to breaking the curse: complete three impossible tasks. With the help of their friend Marjani and a rather unusual ally, Ananna and Naji make their way south again, seeking what seems to be beyond their reach.
Unfortunately, Naji has enemies from the shadowy world known as the Mists, and Ananna must still face the repercussions of going up against the Pirate Confederation. Together, Naji and Ananna must break the curse, escape their enemies — and come to terms with their growing romantic attraction.

Our Thoughts On:

There are some books, some characters that just grip you as a reader. Becoming emotionally invested in the adventure and eagerly awaiting each turn of the page . ..  That sums up author Cassandra Rose Clarke for me.

Heroine Pirate Ananna of the Tanarau is back with Magician/Assassin Nagi returning to the Saga of The Assassin's Curse series. There is a lot of action and peril mixed with revenge and negotiations here between our returning characters and many new additions.

Ananna has always hungered for her own boat on the sea, but as she seeks emplayment/passage on a vessel Ananna get more than she bargains for not only in a new friend Marjani, but also in a stranding on a magical island. Ananna has a such a poignant character in that her own wishes she struggles to attain but she does not want to infringe on her friends really to attain them. There is such a fabulous balance between Naji and Ananna in that readers get swept up in their tale even as it may cost them their lives.

Creeping ever close to breaking Naji's curse could cost him his life, but while that is not concerning to Naji; it is slowly eating up Ananna. The struggle to keep their partnership intact while also trying to break the curse on Naji is taking these characters to dangerous places. As Ananna faces the three impossible tasks that Naji must complete to break his curse before it costs him his life, could not also only put him in danger more, but could also take them away from each other.

Ananna's character is so well developed and entrancing. While evading the Pirate Confederation from her untimely non marriage to an even more disastrous murder in A Pirate's Wish, Ananna's story is gripping on her own. Naji's involvement makes a great daring romance element but really as Ananna grows and tries to seek her own heart's wishes in the book; this is  what makes this such a compelling and enriching read.

Naji holds back his intentions and has many secrets that may just send him away from Ananna as much as he wants to stay. As the curse unfolds and as he seeks to end it by completing these tasks, he continues to keep and also push Ananna away.

Making alliances with a manticore on the Isles of Sky takes Ananna to new heights as this friendship may be the very thing to make all of her wishes come true; if she can survive them. With many battles to ensue and struggling to save Naji while his Order may feel she is akin to an abomination is only a small snippet of the trials that these characters begin to go through in this book to try and attain not only their wishes but also their curses.

And when the assassin, Naji, finally catches up with her, things get even worse. Ananna inadvertently triggers a nasty curse — with a life-altering result. Or at least as normal as the lives of a pirate and an assassin can be.
