Early Review: The Calling

The Calling (Darkness Rising, #2)The Calling
by Kelley Armstrong
Releases 4.10.2012
Harper Collins

My Thoughts On:
Right from where we left of in The Awakening, we find ourselves inside the cabin of a helicopter sending our characters to somewhere safe beyond the fire line. As they soon find out in a harrowing ride across the bay, the pilot of the helicopter is more then he seems and while during a struggle where the pilot attacks Maya Rafe, who has been unconscious on the floorboards, slides out an opened door into the valley below. The teens are struggling to keep the helicopter in flight while at the same time Maya is torn over Rafe's fall and trying to keep it together for the rest of the kids.

As Maya finds out more about her abilities and just what she has underneath her skin, so do her powers grow. Finding out more about herself, and coming to grips that her biological father is one of the bad guys, begins to tear at Maya while at the same time she gathers her wits in this struggle to protect her friends and those she loves while also trying to find out about what happened to her town.

The Calling sends readers into the struggle for the characters to stay alive and keeping hope up as all they ever knew is slowly being unraveled from them. While a group is trying to hunt them down, since soon they find they are experiments gone array, Maya and Daniel and the rest of the teens are fighting within their groups as quickly members are being picked off and used as bait to lure them into traps.

Kelly Armstrong has again created a riveting series that will capture readers with it's action, and withing the stories characters. The whole time I was totally torn over the loss of Rafe and could feel Maya's pain, and also feel her drive to keep herself together for the strength of her group. The Calling is a book not to me missed this year.

Book Blurb from the Publisher:

Maya Delaney's paw-print birthmark is the mark of what she truly is—a skin-walker. She can run faster, climb higher, and see better than nearly everyone else. Experiencing intense connections with the animals that roam the woods outside her home, Maya knows it's only a matter of time before she's able to Shift and become one of them. And she believes there may be others in her small town with surprising talents. Now Maya and her friends have been forced to flee from their homes during a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set. Then they're kidnapped, and after a chilling helicopter crash, they find themselves in the Vancouver Island wilderness with nothing but their extraordinary abilities to help them get back home. In The Calling, the sizzling second book in the Darkness Rising trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong pumps up the romance, danger, and suspense that left readers of The Gathering clamoring for more.
